I am a qualified Landscape Architect and Garden Designer, practising through my Gloucestershire based company, DWN Design, with experience across the commercial, educational and residential markets. Being a former lecturer in Landscape Architecture, I understand the importance of providing advice and information that recognises and promotes high quality design, sustainability and environmental awareness.

I’m delighted to be delivering this design workshop at Tig’s Barn and I look forward to meeting you and sharing a creative insight into the garden design process.

Our Garden Design workshop will appeal to those who are passionate about their garden and would like to gain greater skills in understanding, designing and maximising their outside space to the full. It caters for beginners and those wishing to further basic skills. If you have ever returned home from a visit to the garden centre with a random selection of plants and no real idea as to why you chose them or where you want to place them, this workshop is most definitely for you!

Using the many different external spaces at Tig’s Barn, together with the extensive borrowed views, I will be sharing my skills and knowledge to help you to get the basics right and prepare you to undertake projects of your own. The format of this workshop will be a mix of delivered content and on-site application, so don’t forget to bring your sun screen and wellies – well this is Devon after all.

Nikki Hemstock

Born in South Devon, I have a degree in Interior Architecture and thirty years of design experience across commercial, leisure and residential interiors.

Having carried out projects for many clients across the UK, Channel Islands and France, I am passionate about passing on my design knowledge through my interior design and décor workshops. My greatest thrill is seeing participants  learn new skills and become inspired and confident in making their own interior design and décor choices and decisions.

I’m very excited to be delivering the interiors workshop at Tig’s Barn and I look forward to meeting you and to us creating something fabulous together.

Our Interior Design  workshop is aimed at those with an interest or passion for interior design and caters for beginners and those wishing to further basic skills. Learn how to create an interior mood board for a chosen room in your home using inspirational tricks and tips of the trade.

We learn best by doing and by having fun, and these are the essential ingredients at the core of this course.. Whether you’re about to embark on a design project of your own, want to get to grips with your Interior decor style or perhaps just want to become more confident with your creative decisions, then this workshop is for you.

The course works best if you have a specific room at home that you want to restyle, however this isn't essential. During the workshop you will learn the key elements that make up home décor, starting with how to write a styling brief, understanding why designers refer to keywords, and discovering your preferred interior design style. You will also explore how to choose a colour palette, good spatial planning, focal points and mixing styles. During the course you will make your own interior design mood board (tailored to your specific style) for use at home.

The workshop provides opportunity to meet like minded people, be inspired by Tig's Barn's beautiful surroundings and pick up tricks of the trade to inspire you to go on to create the home of your dreams. Be prepared to get stuck in and roll up your sleeves in what promises to be a fun, full-on, interactive design experience.

What you will need to bring:

  • Photos of the room you would like to restyle.

  • A laptop, tablet or phone to source and print off Inspirational pictures

  • If you are familiar with the site Pinterest you may also like to pin some inspiring interior imagery in advance. Please bring this along with you, either saved on your laptop, tablet or phone or print it off and bring it along with any other magazine clippings, fabric swatches or anything else that you would like to incorporate onto your mood board.

  • All other materials are included in the cost of the workshop, such as home interior magazines for cutting clippings to incorporate onto your mood board, paint swatches, fabric samples and mood board materials. You will also be given a small goodie bag containing suppliers' paint charts and inspirational leaflets to refer and use during and after the workshop.

Your Tutor
Alison Batchelor

I started my first patchwork in 1973, when this age old craft was increasing in popularity. Since then I have designed and produced innumerable pieces and continue to sew on a daily basis.

I have City & Guilds in Patchwork & Quilting and Adult Teaching qualifications and have been teaching for over 12 years at both beginner and more advanced levels. I am delighted to be leading this workshop  at Tig's Barn and hope to see you on one of my courses.

This workshop will appeal to the absolute beginner possibly with little, or no, sewing experience and those with existing sewing skills who want to learn patchwork & quilting.

The course is interactive and during the workshop you will learn the basics of patchwork starting with a brief history of the craft and ending with your first patchwork item to take home with you - either a cushion or a wall hanging.

By the end of the workshop you will have sufficient experience to progress with projects of your own. Not essential, however if you own a sewing machine you may bring it as long as it’s in good working order, you know how to use it and you have the instruction book.

Once you have learned the basic techniques of Patchwork & Quilting, whether on our beginners course or elsewhere, you will be ready for more advanced skills. There are so many different areas of this wonderful craft to learn about from the earliest paper piecing to the complex precision piecing, needle turn hand appliqué & even free motion quilting. On this course we will make a large cushion or wall hanging

Please bring your sewing machine, making sure it is in good working order and you have the instruction book. Any specialised patchwork machine feet would be a huge asset to you during the workshop e.g. 1/4 inch foot , open toe foot & walking foot . You will also need to bring materials - Alison will advise you on what's needed.

By the end of the workshop you will have sufficient knowledge and practical experience of complex techniques to progress with more advanced projects of your own.
